New MIMO Antennas for WiMAX provide performance advantages over traditional diversity systems
Schiller Park, IL, Oct 29, 2010 – MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) systems, also known as spatial multiplexing, use multi-element MIMO antennas to transmit data on different antenna elements. The data is decoded and combined at the receive end. The net result is greater data throughput and improved bandwidth efficiency.
Mobile Mark now offers a WiMAX version of its Mobile MIMO Antenna Series. The MIMO antenna consists of three identical antenna elements housed within a single radome. Each element is fed by a separate cable and each element covers the same spectrum: 2.1-2.7 & 3.3-3.8 GHz.
The SMD-3500 MIMO Antenna Series covers the spectrum listed above, 2.1-2.7 & 3.3-3.8 GHz. This means the same antenna can be used for several different WiMAX networks, e.g. the Sprint/Clearwire network at 2.5-2.7 GHz, the regional Broadband Wireless networks in the US at 3.65 GHz, and the many WiMAX networks at 3.5 GHz around the world. Mobile Mark’s SMD-3500 Series joins the current SMD-W Series WiFi which covers 2.4-2.5 & 4.9-6.0 GHz.
The introduction of MIMO technology and MIMO antennas is driven by a desire for a greater level of consistent and reliable coverage. Many of the newest wireless networks, such as WiFi 802.11n, WiMAX, HSPA+ and LTE, are moving towards greater use of MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) systems and MIMO Antennas.
A well designed antenna is an important part of a complete MIMO system. “The initial feedback from customers has been quite positive. It is rare to find a mobile antenna that provides the electrical and mechanical standards needed for consistent coverage in tough settings.” according to Ken Lukowski, VP Sales.
This Low Profile Surface Mount MIMO Antenna is housed in a rugged, UV Resistant, ASA radome that measures 1.5-inches (38mm) tall x 3.5-inches (89mm) in diameter. Standard configuration is Low Loss RF-195 cable with SMA plug.
The SMD-3500 MIMO Antennas provide 4 dBi gain with a VSWR of less than 2:1. With 1/4 wavelength element spacing and 20+ dB isolation, these units are configured for true MIMO performance improvements.
The antennas will stand up to harsh environments. They have a water ingress rating of IPx7 and have been tested to and passed Industry and Military shock and vibration standards: EN61373, IEEE1478, MIL-810G and TIA-329.2-C.
